Methyl Vinyl Ether
Synonyms: Methoxyethylene
Ethenyl methyl ether
Molecular Formula: C3H6O
Cas No.: 107-25-5
Structural Formula:
Vinyl methyl ether is a colorless, flammable, volatile, low-boiling-point gas with a slight characteristic ether odor. It is slightly soluble in water but readily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, diethyl ether, and acetone. It is chemically reactive; the carbon-carbon double bonds in its molecule readily undergo addition, polymerization, and oxidation reactions, making it an important monomer and intermediate in organic synthesis.
Application:
Polymer Synthesis: Primarily used in the production of polyvinyl methyl ether (PVME), a polymer with excellent water solubility, adhesiveness, and film-forming properties, used in coatings, adhesives, water treatment flocculants, and papermaking additives; it can also be copolymerized with vinyl acetate, maleic anhydride, etc., to prepare functional copolymers.
Organic Synthesis Intermediates: Used in the synthesis of key intermediates for pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and fragrances, such as in the preparation of vitamins, insect repellents, and ether derivatives; also used in the production of crosslinking agents, plasticizers, and surfactants.
Others: Used as an alkylating agent in organic synthesis, a monomer regulator in polymerization reactions, and a low-temperature solvent and refrigerant component.
